There was a time when thinking about it may have changed your entire mood. A name could make your stomach tighten. A memory could steal your sleep. A conversation could send you back emotionally to a place you thought you had left. That is what pain can do. But healing begins to change the relationship you have with the memory. The facts may remain the same. But you are different. You begin to realize that peace does not require every question to be answered.
It does not require an apology from someone who may never give one. It does not require everyone to understand your side of the story. It does not require the past to somehow become fair. Peace can arrive before resolution does. That is one of God’s great gifts in healing. He can quiet what another person never repaired. He can settle what circumstances never explained. He can give rest to a heart that spent too long waiting for someone else to make things right.
Your peace is too valuable to place entirely in someone else’s hands. Bring the unfinished parts to God. Bring Him the conversation you may never have. Bring Him the apology you may never receive. Bring Him the question that may never be answered. Then ask Him for something deeper than explanation. Ask for peace. Not a peace that denies what happened. A peace that says: It happened. It mattered. It hurt. But it will not rule me anymore.
“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:7 (NIV)
Lord,
There are things I may never fully understand and questions that may never be answered the way I want them to be. Today I stop making my peace dependent upon receiving every explanation. Guard my heart. Guard my mind. Quiet the places in me that keep replaying what I cannot change. Give me peace that is deeper than circumstances and stronger than memories. Help me release what remains unfinished into Your hands. I choose to protect the peace You are restoring within me.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
