Biblical encouragement for making decisions when you don’t know what to do and need God’s wisdom for your next step.
God never expects you to have all the answers. In fact, one of the greatest signs of spiritual maturity is recognizing how much you need Him. When we admit we don’t know what to do, we position ourselves to receive the wisdom only God can give. His wisdom isn’t reserved for pastors, scholars, or people who have followed Him for decades. It is available to every believer who humbly asks. He gives generously, not reluctantly, and never shames us for needing His direction. Sometimes God’s wisdom changes our circumstances. More often, it changes us. He renews our perspective, strengthens our faith, and gives us confidence to take the next faithful step. Remember, wisdom isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about trusting the One who does.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
James 1:5 (NIV)
James 1:5 reminds us that not knowing what to do is an invitation to seek God, not a reason for shame. Scripture tells us that when we lack wisdom, we can ask God, who gives generously and without finding fault.
For someone facing uncertainty or an important decision, asking God for wisdom means bringing the situation to Him in prayer, seeking direction through Scripture, and trusting Him with the next faithful step even when the entire path is not clear.
Father,
Thank You for being a generous God who never tires of guiding Your children. Today I ask for wisdom in every conversation, every opportunity, and every decision. Help me trust Your direction even when I cannot see the entire path before me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Ask God one specific question today and spend time listening for His answer through Scripture and prayer. If this Prayer & Perspective encouraged you, share it with someone who is seeking God’s direction. In this week’s While You Wait Wednesday, Dr. Lael unpacks what it actually looks like to ask God for wisdom instead of white-knuckling a decision on your own. Watch it here, then come back and try today’s invitation for yourself.
This month, we’re walking through wisdom, identity, honest faith, and the peace of God. The September Companion Journal gives you one place to pause, reflect, pray, and write your way through each week’s Prayer & Perspective.
You do not have to keep up perfectly or fill in every blank. Use the journal throughout the month whenever something in the devotional speaks to your heart.

Prayer & Perspective goes even deeper inside the HOPErs Community, where we sit with these same words together through prayer, conversation, encouragement, and While You Wait Wednesday teachings.
Prayer & Perspective gives you five minutes a day. The Companion Journal gives you a place to hold onto what those minutes stir up.
