Some experiences leave a mark. You may never forget what was said. You may remember exactly where you were when everything changed. You may remember the betrayal, the diagnosis, the goodbye, the disappointment, the rejection, or the moment you realized life would not unfold the way you expected. Healing does not require you to pretend those things did not matter. They mattered. They hurt. They changed you. But they do not have to control you forever.
There is an important difference between remembering what happened and continuing to live inside what happened. God wants to lead you forward. That does not mean erasing your history. It means allowing Him to redeem it. There may come a day when you remember what happened without feeling the same sting. You may tell the story without falling apart. You may think about the person without anger consuming you. You may visit the memory and realize:
That happened to me, but it no longer owns me. That is healing. Surrender says: “God, I cannot change what happened, but I refuse to give yesterday’s pain authority over today’s peace or tomorrow’s possibilities.” Release it again today. Not because it did not matter. But because your future matters too much to remain imprisoned by your past.
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Psalm 147:3 (NIV)
Lord,
You know what happened, and You know how deeply it affected me. Today I place it back into Your hands. I cannot rewrite yesterday, but with You I can walk differently into tomorrow. Help me release resentment, regret, anger, disappointment, and every memory I have allowed to steal today’s peace. Bind up my wounds. Restore what has been damaged within me. And teach me to carry the wisdom from my experience without continuing to carry the weight of the pain.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
