Pain can leave us with more than memories. It can leave habits. We learn to protect ourselves. We expect disappointment before it happens. We become suspicious of kindness. We keep people at a distance. We say, “I’m fine,” because depending on anyone feels too risky. We prepare for rejection before anyone has rejected us. Those responses may have helped you survive a difficult season. But survival habits can become heavy when God is trying to lead you into healing.
There comes a point when we have to ask: Is this still protecting me, or is it preventing me from living freely? Healing is not only about what happened to you. It is also about what happened inside you because of what happened to you. Maybe you learned that vulnerability was dangerous. Maybe disappointment taught you to expect the worst. Maybe betrayal taught you that everyone eventually leaves. Maybe rejection convinced you that something was wrong with you.
But hurt does not get to teach you the final lesson. God does. God can teach you that wisdom and walls are not the same thing. That boundaries and bitterness are not the same thing. That forgiveness and access are not the same thing. That you can remember what happened without expecting it to happen everywhere you go. God can help you keep the wisdom and release the fear. You do not have to carry every survival strategy into your healed life. Some things helped you get through. Now God may be asking you to put them down so you can move forward.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”
Isaiah 43:18–19 (NIV)
Lord,
Show me what I am carrying that no longer belongs in my life. Thank You for bringing me through what hurt me, but do not allow yesterday’s pain to shape every expectation I have about tomorrow. Give me wisdom without fear. Give me boundaries without bitterness. Give me discernment without closing my heart. Help me recognize the new thing You are doing and give me courage to make room for it. I trust You to teach me how to live beyond survival.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
