There are seasons that can make you wonder whether you missed your moment. You lost time. A relationship ended. An opportunity disappeared. A dream was delayed. Something you prayed for did not happen the way you believed it would. And if you are not careful, disappointment will start writing conclusions God never wrote. It’s too late. I missed my chance. Things will never be the same. Maybe the best part of my life is behind me.
But God is not limited by what you lost. Your future is not canceled because your past did not go according to plan. Joel speaks to people who had experienced devastating loss. Yet God’s message was restoration. “I will repay you for the years…” Think about that. God does not only restore things. God can redeem years. The years you thought were wasted. The years you spent waiting. The years you spent recovering. The years that did not produce what you expected.
The years you wish you could get back. Nothing surrendered to God is beyond His ability to redeem. You may not get everything back exactly as it was, and perhaps that is not what you need. God can do something new. He can take wisdom from your disappointment, strength from your struggle, maturity from your waiting, and faith from your healing and carry all of it into what comes next. Do not spend today mourning so deeply over what did not happen that you miss what God is preparing to do.
You still have a future. There is still purpose. There is still possibility. There is still more. What happened was a chapter. It was not the conclusion.
“I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten…”
Joel 2:25 (NIV)
Lord,
Thank You that my future is not canceled because something in my past did not go according to plan. Help me release the belief that I have lost too much, waited too long, or missed my opportunity. Redeem what has been painful. Restore what needs to be restored. Use even the years I thought were wasted for Your purpose. Give me courage to stop looking backward with regret and begin looking forward with expectation. My future belongs to You. And I trust that You are not finished with my story.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
