Cover and Care

Kara English LPC teaching “You Are Covered, Not Forgotten” from The Healing Space series by While You Wait Ministries

There’s a moment most of us know too well. The room goes quiet. The text doesn’t come. The prayer feels like it hits the ceiling. And something in us whispers: I’ve been forgotten.

– Kara English LPC

It’s a small thought. But it’s not a small thing.

That whisper isn’t random. It’s old. It’s been with you longer than you realize. And it shows up loudest when life gets quiet, when the season drags on, when the answer doesn’t come, when the people you counted on go silent. Your nervous system reads that quiet, and instead of hearing rest, it hears something familiar and painful: I am alone in this.

This week in The Healing Room, we’re starting an 8-week series called Covered & Cared For. And we’re starting here, in the silence, because that’s where most of us need to start. Not because something is wrong with us. Because something happened to us, and our body learned from it.

If someone left us early through death, divorce, distance, addiction, or just not showing up the way we needed, our nervous system did what it was built to do. It learned. It put up a small sign that said: when the people who matter go quiet, they’re gone.

That sign was protective once. It helped us brace. It helped us survive the kind of grief and disappointment a child shouldn’t have to carry. But that sign doesn’t go away just because we grew up. It stays. And it shows up in our adult relationships including our relationship with God.

So when God is quiet when we’re in a season of waiting, of unanswered prayer, of feeling spiritually flat that old sign lights up. And we don’t hear care in the silence. We hear the old wound. We hear: I’ve been forgotten.

That isn’t a faith problem. That’s an attachment story. And the difference matters, because you can’t pray your way out of something you haven’t named.

This is the line we’re going to come back to all week. It’s worth saying twice. Read it slowly:

Feeling forgotten doesn’t mean you are forgotten.

Your feelings are real information. They tell you something true about what’s happening inside you. But they’re not always accurate information about what’s happening outside you. The feeling of being forgotten is real. The conclusion that you have been forgotten is something else.

God’s care doesn’t leave when your feelings shift. That’s not a bypass. It’s not me telling you to feel better or pray harder. It’s a reframe, a clinical and a spiritual one. Care is not the absence of hard feelings. Care is the presence of God in the middle of them.

Psalm 62:8 says, “Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.”

Notice what it doesn’t say. It doesn’t say clean up your heart, or fix your heart, or make sure your heart is grateful before you bring it. It says pour it out. All of it. The forgotten feeling. The angry feeling. The exhausted, I-don’t-know-if-I-trust-You-anymore feeling.

That’s the invitation this week. Not to pretend the silence doesn’t hurt. To bring the silence, and the hurt, and the old wound that the silence reactivated, and pour it all out in front of a God who can hold every bit of it.
