What Loyalty Actually Looks Like

Rev. Dr. Lael C. Melville walking beside another woman in a garden, illustrating faithful friendship, loyalty, and the gift of people who stay through life's difficult seasons.

We talk a lot about loyalty. But I think sometimes we confuse it with convenience.Loyalty that only shows up when things are easy is not really loyalty. That is just preference.

Real loyalty is what Ruth showed Naomi. It was not a grand speech. It was a decision. A quiet, costly, faithful decision to stay when she had every reason to go. She was young. She was a widow. She had her own grief to manage. She could have walked back to her own people and her own chance at starting over.

But she stayed. Not because Naomi was easy to be around. Not because the future looked promising. She stayed because leaving was not something she was willing to do.

That kind of loyalty is rare. And if you have even one person in your life who shows up like that, you have been given something precious.

But here is the other side of that:

Some of you are that person for someone else. The one who stayed when it was inconvenient. Who kept calling when the calls were not returned. Who kept showing up even when you were tired of showing up.

Do not stop.

God does not miss faithful people. He does not overlook steadfast love. He honors it, even in seasons where the only witness is Him.

Scripture for today: "A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity." — Proverbs 17:17

Father, thank You for the loyal people in my life. Help me be that kind of friend to others too. Give me the courage to stay when staying is the harder choice. Amen.

Today’s invitation: Think of someone who has stayed loyal to you through a hard season. Reach out and tell them what their faithfulness has meant to you.

Loyal community is hard to find and worth protecting when you do. If you are looking for a place where women genuinely show up for each other, we would love to have you with us.
